Manta Cleaning Stations in the Maldives

A spectacle of wild nature… that you can experience every week with Blue Force Fleet

In the warm, crystal-clear waters of the central atolls of the Maldives, a fascinating phenomenon unfolds, straight out of a nature documentary: manta cleaning stations. These sites are not only vital for the health of these majestic creatures but also a highlight for divers dreaming of unforgettable underwater encounters.

The Maldives: One of the World’s Best Destinations to See Mantas
The Maldives is internationally renowned as one of the best places on Earth to observe reef mantas (Mobula alfredi). Unlike other regions where mantas are only present seasonally, in the Maldives, these spectacular creatures are year-round residents, allowing regular encounters at multiple points across the archipelago.
It’s estimated that the reef manta population in the Maldives exceeds 5,000 identified individuals, one of the largest and most studied populations in the world. Thanks to years of research and photo-identification programs, we know that many of these mantas return repeatedly to the same cleaning stations, making each dive a potential reunion with familiar giants.

What is a Cleaning Station?
Cleaning stations are specific areas of the reef where various species of “cleaner” fish—such as cleaner wrasses (Labroides dimidiatus) or dwarf angelfish (Centropyge spp.)—establish their territory. Large marine animals like mantas, sharks, or turtles visit these stations to be “serviced.”
The behavior is highly ritualized: mantas adopt a stationary position, with gills open and fins extended, allowing cleaner fish to enter their mouths, gills, and body surfaces to feed on parasites and dead tissue. This process not only supports their physiological health but also contributes to the balance of the reef ecosystem.

What is the Divers’ Encounter with Mantas Like?
During our dives, we carefully descend and approach the reef area where the cleaning station is located. Mantas may already be there… or not. Sometimes one appears, other times two, eight, or even over twenty! Occasionally, patience is required, as they don’t always arrive immediately. But waiting is usually rewarded.
Our guides will instruct you on how to position yourself and behave underwater to avoid interfering with their natural behavior. Watching these majestic animals appear, observing their elegance as they hover motionless while receiving their “cleaning service,” is one of the most magical moments a diver can experience. It’s a perfect example of the ecosystem’s balance, with large animals allowing tiny fish to remove their parasites. And we, privileged witnesses, experience it in the heart of nature.

Why Do Mantas Visit Cleaning Stations?
Although mantas travel vast distances across the Indian Ocean, they tend to return periodically to the same cleaning stations. These areas serve key functions:

  • Body care: Removal of parasites and skin maintenance.
  • Social interaction: Displays of hierarchy, socialization, and even courtship behaviors.
  • Navigation: Reference points for their movements across the atoll.
The central atolls of the Maldives are considered top global spots for observing this behavior.

The Key Lies in Experience
Observing mantas at a cleaning station is not a matter of chance. The expertise of our guides, combined with deep knowledge of ocean conditions, lunar phases, and animal behavior, allows us to take our guests to the right place at the right time every week.
